PhD Student Jasmin Martino wins SARDI Women’s Science Bursary

Congratulations to Jasmin Martino for her recent award, winner of the 2016 SARDI Science Bursary for Women. Jasmin is currently undertaking her PhD research supervised by Professor Bronwyn Gillanders, Dr Zoe Doubleday and Dr Tony Fowler (SARDI).

The $1500 award will be used to support her research on South Australia’s snapper through her thesis, ‘Reconstructing the growth and physiological histories of an iconic Australian fish species’. Jasmin’s PhD focuses on reconstructing growth and metabolic rate histories of snapper (Sparidae) using stable isotope signatures in otoliths (ear bones). Jasmin has recently completed an experiment raising fish in different water temperatures and then investigating metabolic rate. Her respirometry chambers used 3D printers to produce the parts. The otoliths of these same fish are now being dissected and will shortly be analysed for stable isotopes.
