Our paper titled “Global proliferation of cephalopods” was published on 23 May in Current Biology. We (Zoe Doubleday and Bronwyn Gillanders) have entered this publication in the Peer Prize for Women in Science (Cephalopods on the rise as oceans change; team called Squidlings) – feel free to vote for us! We’ve been overwhelmed by the media attention surrounding the paper and excited by the diverse range of outlets that have picked it up. Check out the altmetrics (an indicator of online attention and activity) for the paper which provide links to all 114 news stories, as well as the blogs, tweeters and Facebook pages. We love the picture on the blog the science of illustration which is a water colour painting of three cool cephalopods inspired by the song “My Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades” by Timbuck 3.

Bronwyn Gillanders was also elected President of the World Council of Fisheries Societies at the recent World Fisheries Congress in Busan, Korea. The next World Fisheries Congress will be held in Adelaide, Australia in October 2020. Register your interest here.

Congratulations to Jasmin Martino, winner of the 2016 SARDI Science Bursary for Women. Jasmin is currently undertaking her PhD research reconstructing growth and metabolic histories of snapper, and is supervised by Professor Bronwyn Gillanders, Dr Zoe Doubleday and Dr Tony Fowler (SARDI).

In other news, Dr Chris Izzo, who has been a member of the Gillanders Aquatic Ecology Lab for around 10 years, has moved to Fisheries Research Development Corporation in Adelaide as a Project Manager. We wish Chris all the best in his new adventure! Alice Mirasole has also completed her intern and returned to Palermo in Sicily, Italy. We wish Alice all the best with completing her PhD over the next few months.
