December 2016 news

The final news for the year! As this news becomes available I’m heading to New Zealand to hike (tramp) the Milford Track in Fiordland followed by a cycle trip along the old rail trails of central Otago. More on this trip in 2017.

Bronwyn attended the Australia-Indonesia Science Symposium at the Shine Dome in Canberra (28 Nov-1 Dec 2016). This symposium aimed to promote collaboration between the two countries by focusing on science that was of mutual interest to both countries. A series of plenary presentations were provided on the morning of the first day, after which workshops on agriculture, marine science and climate change, and health occurred. Bronwyn gave a presentation titled “Fishing in a multiple use marine environment”.

Other news includes our successful ARC Discovery project awarded to Ivan Nagelkerken, David Booth (UTS), Corey Bradshaw, David Schoeman (Uni Sunshine Coast) and Bronwyn Gillanders titled “Do native invasions challenge Australian fisheries species?” Watch this space for more news on this project.

The final paper of Rex’s PhD has just been made available online - Exploiting the innate behaviour of common carp, Cyprinus carpio, to limit invasion and spawning in wetlands of the River Murray, Australia (Fisheries Management and Ecology).

The first paper from Nastaran’s PhD has just been published in Fisheries Research. It is titled ‘Determining climate-growth relationships in a temperate fish: A sclerochronological approach’. Well done to both Nastaran and Rex.

Matt McMillan has just returned from a trip to tag school sharks. Unfortunately, not many sharks caught, and no pregnant ones. He is using a portable ultrasound to check whether the females are pregnant or not.

Finally, congratulations to Mandy Shao who received a first class honours.
